How to Begin

To begin, simply create and upload a personal profile on our site. This is your profile page – show the world your talents! Your profile page can include photos, a short video/music file, your interests and hobbies, friends, blogs – you can even free-form: draw pictures, post poetry, whatever!

Don't Post Personal Information on your Profile

For your own protection refrain from posting any email addresses, IM handles or anything resembling your personal contact information anywhere on your profile or site. You ARE allowed one free link on your profile which you may point to anywhere on the web you want, so go ahead and put a link to your MySpace page, website or any site you want.

Can't already be famous

You may NOT already be famous. The whole idea here is to see if we can help someone who is currently unknown. If you are known to 1,000,000 or more people already (or if you've won HowFamous in the past), then you really don't need the help of our site. Please let someone else have a shot at fame.

14 and over only, please

You must be 14 or over to create an account and enter a HowFamous contest.

Contest Guidelines

Once you complete your profile, select one of the Current Contests to compete in. You may only enter in one contest at a time. Please note that changing contests before the end will result in the loss of all your Fame Points.

Here’s how it works:

Tier 1- This is the starting level where anyone may enroll to compete in a contest. Tier 1 competition lasts three (3) weeks, during which contestants compete against each other, advancing by the point system (Fame Points or fps). At the end of Tier 1 competition, the top 10% of contestants with the most Fame Points will advance to Tier 2. If the top 10% of contestants is fewer than 11, then the top 11 will advance to Tier 2.

Tier 2- In Tier 2, no new users are allowed to enroll. The advancing contestants from Tier 1 continue to compete with each other for Fame Points. Tier 2 competition lasts for two (2) weeks. At the end of the two week contest period, the top 10 contestants with the most Fame Points become Finalists, advancing to Tier 3.

Tier 3- Unlike the previous two Tiers, there is no competition for Fame Points in Tier 3. Here the Finalists battle it out and win by a vote from the community. Any registered user may vote, but may only vote once. The winner of the contest is the one with the most votes. Winners are spotlighted on the HowFamous website and become eligible for inclusion in our advertising campaign and hold “winner status” for 6 weeks. Any additonal prizes to a particular contest will be noted in the contest description.

Contest Submission MUST be of you or your work

While you can put whatever you want on your profile page (as long as it is tasteful and legal), don't post any submissions that are not of you or your work. No advertising please. We’re more interested in seeing your talent! No one wants to see another MTV video of Britney Spears; besides, you might be violating copyright laws, and that's absolutely not allowed on this site. Do not submit anything illegal, overtly pornographic / trashy / grotesque. Glamorous photos like the ones seen in "Stuff" or "FHM" are OK. So are images of sheer stupidity such as you might see in "Jackass“ (viva la Bam!).

How to Get Points

You advance in your contest by accumulating Fame Points (fps). There are several ways to get more points:

• HEAD-TO-HEAD: You get +1 fps every time you win a head-to-head competition in your chosen contest on our 'Rank Contestants' section.
• PROFILE VIEW: You get +1 fp anytime anyone views your profile EXCEPT yourself.
• FRIEND/FAN REFERRAL: You get +5 fps anytime you invite your friends/fans to join HowFamous.com
• EMAIL YOUR PROFILE: You get +2 fps whenever your profile is emailed to someone and he or she clicks back to view your profile page.
• GIFT POINTS: You can receive Gift Points from other members each week. Premium Services members get +50 Gift Points (+5 max GP given to any one user per week) and Basic members get +3 Gift Points each week to give to whomever they choose.
• GET ADDED AS A FRIEND: If someone lists you as a friend on his or her Friends List, you'll get +20 fp if he or she is a Premium member and +1 if he or she is a Basic member. (You will lose those points if your friend removes you from his or her Friends List.)
• LOGIN EVERY DAY: You get +1 fp just for logging in every 24 hours.

How to Read Your Score

On each profile page, you'll see three pieces of information in the "Player Profile" box that look something like this example: SpeedRacer / 555 fp / 9 percentile. The first bit of information is the username of the contestant you're looking at. The middle number is the total accumulated fame points this user has acquired. The last number is a percentile ranking of fame. In this example, Speedracer is only 9% famous. 0% means you're completely unknown. 100% means you're the winner. (Higher is better.)

You will also see win/loss information after your score that looks like this example: Wins: 39 Losses: 11. This means that you have been in 50 contests in which 39 people selected you over your opponent and 11 people selected your opponent over you.

Rules may change

The rules are subject to change as new features and tweaks are made to the site. Anyone caught breaking the Rules will have their profile edited or disabled.

Don’t try and cheat the system

Any other ways to get more points is cheating, and cheaters will be booted from our site! There are safeguards built into the system, and while we don't want to kick anybody off the site, we will do so 'cause it ends up hurting the rest of the community. Play fair, play nice!
